The Bikes For Flight Run 2007
Raised £3500.00
For the Cornwall Air Ambulance.
The previous total was £3389.37 until Dash a forum member who works overseas did a whip round whilst in Baku and raised an additional £100.00 And Brian another forum member donating the odd £10.63 to bring us up to £3500.00 Thanks guys! |
Well the first bikes for flight motorcycle run has now taken place. We had a successful day with a good turn out, weather and fund raising. Although we know we can achieve more next year. Something to aim for. We at bikes4flight, rideout-sw and all the sponsors listed would like to thank all those who came along to support the Air Ambulance. If you were there please leave us a message in the guestbook and tell us about your day. Better still tell your friends about it, lets make next year bigger and raise more much needed funds for the air ambulance. To put things in perspective the ambulance costs somewhere in the region of £420.00 per flying hour to run and man. The money we raised on the 22nd will keep them flying for around 8 hours!
Our visit to RAF St Mawgan to hand over a cheque to the Air Ambulance crew. It took two attempts to do these as on our 1st arrival the guys had an emergency call and had to leave immediately. So a couple hours later we returned and was successful in the cheque hand over. We were also lucky enough to be shown around the helicopter and a demonstration of how things work when out on a call from setting things up to what happens out in the field. Got to take my hat off to the guys who man this, they don't stop! within the short time we were there they had 2 calls and were gone within 2 minutes.
These guys really do work hard saving the lives of people like you and me. This year is their 20th Anniversary of serving the people of Cornwall. Bellow is a full report of how the 1st bikes for flight motorcycle run went.
Motorcyclists from west Cornwall descended on to the Wharside car park Penzance from around 9.30am on a dry Sunday morning, The marshall's were there collecting riders donations and tagging bikes ready for the run. The atmosphere there was positive and very relaxed, people from Penzance both local & holidaying in the area also showed great interest in all the bikes parked in the car park ready for the run. Riders inundated the small cafe there for breakfasts, something they were not expecting. At around 11am the run set off from Wharside escorted and marshaled by the first and last motorcycle club Thanks to all at first & last for their help on the day. These were all followed by a vehicle from Damerells motorcycles in case or breakdown etc. The run headed out of Penzance and along the A30 where at Chiverton Cross they headed along the atlantic highway to Wadebridge.

All the time this was going on in Penzance there was a second starting point at Ocean BMW in plymouth. With bikes arriving again from around 9.30am ready for the run. BMW laid on coffee for all the riders and the Marshall's who were collecting donations and tagging bikes. Again a good atmosphere with all having a good morning. Again at around 11am the bikes set off from Plymouth marshalled and escorted by rideout-sw and DC Bikers, Thanks to DC Bikers that helped out for the run both on the day and leading up to the run. Again this was followed up by a support vehicle from Damerells Motorcycles. Leaving Plymouth and heading down the A38 to Dobwalls, from there heading to Bodmin and Wadebridge. As far as we know a run starting at the same time from two different ends of the county has not been done before, with the Penzance riders arriving at the showground just ahead of the Plymouth riders. It was successful and we will do it like this again..JPG)
Bikes started arriving from both directions at Royal Cornwall Showground from around 12.30pm in the afternoon. All bikes were marshalled into the show ground and parked a little away from the main show area. We had a wide variety of bikes on the run, from custom choppers, sports bikes, trikes, tourers and I did also see at least one rider on L plates. Fantastic to see a run with all types of bikes in. From here it was time to take a look around, have a coffee and some food. Atmosphere was great with people chilling out on the grass with food or taking a look at the stands. Also during the afternoon live music was provided by Fourteen Gauge & Kriss Lundy who played all afternoon. Fourteen Gauge are a four piece band who's members are all Ambulance staff based in Cornwall. Kriss Lundy is a Meat Loaf tribute who performs all over the uk. Stage supplied by GT Motorcycles and the PA system provided by BA sound. All in all a successful day and a good amount raised for the Air Ambulance, which incidentally did make an appearance later in the afternoon on their way back from a mission in Torpoint, to show their appreciation of what was achieved on the day. We will have a cheque presentation to the Air Ambulance at the St Mawgan base over the next couple weeks, when we can tie in all who are needed to be there together.
We have had such good feedback from the run that we will be running this again next year and hope to make it a lot bigger, i.e a lot more bikes, more to see and do at the showground, a full day. If you have suggestions on what more we can do for you at the showground next year then please Contact us with your ideas.
I personally would like to thank all those that have helped me pull this run off, it wasn't easy, we needed marshals at 3 venues and getting volunteers is never easy, but we managed it, everyone involved was part of this. From dealers, caterers, IAM, BMF, members handing out leaflets, distribution of posters, Motorcycle clubs, Devon and Cornwall Police, bands, friends and family, Radio Cornwall, Atlantic FM, The Royal Cornwall Show Ground, Penwith District Council. And to all those who attended the run and donated to the Air Ambulance. Without any of you there would have been no Bikes For Flight.

Some of you may have noticed we were two stands down on what we advertised. The NABD and B&H Motorcycles had to pull out at short notice due to unavoidable circumstances. Both have sent their sincere apologies to all those that attended the run.
